The Alpha Kappa Chapter has long excelled in academics. The chapter is very proud of the scholarship programs in place. New member programs include 15 mandatory study hours weekly, as well as a big brother mentor program. This program pairs each new member with an older brother in the fraternity with the same major. It allows new collegiants to get honest advice from more experienced students in their potential field. This pairing has often lead to long lasting, professional contacts and relationships. The Kappa Alpha Order National Foundation also understands the singular importance of scholarship. The fundamental reason for attending college is to gain knowledge and experience. Guests at the very first fraternity gatherings were not inclined to wear togas. Rather, they shared essays and debated topics pertinent to the educated man. From the outset, the foremost purpoes of the college fraternity was to promote scholarly activities. Today, KA reinforces this educational mission through educational guidance programs that focus on scholarship for four years, not just during the new member experience. A good scholarship program for the chapter focuses on the whole chapter making the grade through incentives and rewards, scholarships, awards, and competitions. The Order should compliment the undergraduate educational experience while providing the student with the resources and assistance to succeed academically. As a result, members of KA should perform better academically than they would if they were not members. The Order promotes academic standars, similar to the college or university. If the university or interfraternity council (IFC) mandates a higher requirement, that becomes our minimum requirement. Any claim that one's individual academic performance is of no concern to the Order could not be further from the truth. A members academic performance reflects upon KA, just as does his day-to-day behavior. We have a brotherly responsibility to help a man develop his potential and we have a duty to see that his performance upholds the standards of the Order.
